Harry French artworks
Harry French was born in 1943 and educated in the Rossendale Valley, Lancashire, UK.
He studied at Bolton College of Art and Design 1958-63. This long period of study enabled him to be theoretically and practically involved in most art forms. During these informative years there was a shift from traditional art education to basic design courses which gave him an insight into the past, present and future skills needed for young artists and designers. His final course was in illustration, before studying art education at Leeds University. These varied skills enabled him to engage in a successful 40 year teaching career in all phases of art and design education. His research projects are housed in the National Arts Education Archive at Leeds University
In 1964 he arrived in the city of Lincoln and has not yet found a good enough reason to move away. He lives in a village some three miles north of the city with his wife, Regina. She was born in Schleswig Holstein and moved to Yorkshire at the age of seven. Harry's introduction to the German side of the family and Ost Holstein (home and holiday destination of many of the German Expressionists) soon led to new influences and the meeting of leading artists and craftspersons.
A major theme in his work is based around the Baltic Sea (Ost See) from Hamburg to the island of Fehmarn. Harry and Regina have two grown up children and three young grandchildren. Harry French has had many art exhibitions the UK and Germany. His work is in private collections throughout Europe.
In 2002 he retired from teaching and moved into a joint studio with artist Linda Durance to specialise in printmaking and occasionally working as an artist-in-residence.
